SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING

Lancaster County operates three refuse collection and recycling sites.

  • Kilmarnock - Located on White Pine Road (VSH 788) one mile SW of Kilmarnock.
  • Lancaster - One mile east of Lancaster Courthouse on Regina Road (VSH 604).
  • Nuttsville - Located on Gaines Road (VSH 723) one-quater mile from the intersection of Nuttsville Road and River Road.

All three sites are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily except Christmas Day.

These sites accept residential waste and limited amounts of commercial waste and construction debris generated in Lancaster County. Used oil, antifreeze, batteries and other hazardous materials, used tires and wood debris are considered "special wastes" and are to be handled as noted below.

Construction Waste

Effective January 1, 2011, Lively Woodyard will no longer accept construction waste. Residents may take construction waste to County collection points instead. Commercial firms/Contractors are required to make their own disposal arrangements. Stumps, wood, brush, leaves and other yard waste will continue to be accepted at Lively Woodyard. Contact the County Administrator's Office, 8311 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster, Va 22503, 804-462-5129 if questions arise.

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Waste Collection

Lancaster County sets aside two days each year for the collection of household hazardous wastes and electronic wastes. The most recent collection day was Saturday, October 15, 2011. One hundred forty-five citizens particpated in the program, disposing of 2,648 pounds of household hazardous waste and 3,660 pounds of e-waste.

More information will be available on this site in the weeks leading up to the next Hazardous Waste Collection Day, which is scheduled for May 19, 2012.

Wood Debris/Brush/Yard Waste

On September 1, 2003, Lancaster County closed its wood debris collection area at the Refuse Collection Site on Regina Road (VSH 604).

Lancaster County has arranged for the Lively Wood Yard, located at 6088 Mary Ball Road one-half mile south of Lively, to accept non-commercial wood debris from Lancaster County homeowners at no cost to the homeowner. Wood debris generated from commercial activities will also be accepted at this facility, but haulers of such debris will be expected to pay a reasonable disposal fee.

For more information, please contact the County Administration Office at (804) 462-5129.

Used Tires

On October 1, 2007, Lancaster County closed its used tire recycling area at the Refuse Collection Site on Gaines Road (VSH 723) near Nuttsville.

Used tires are now accepted at the Lively Wood Yard, 6088 Mary Ball Road, approximately one-half mile south of Lively. Persons wishing to dispose of used tires will continue to pay the used tire disposal fee at the County Administration Office at the Lancaster Courthouse.

For more information, please contact the County Administration Office at (804) 462-5129.

Other Automotive Wastes

Many local auto parts retailers and auto repair shops collect and recycle used oil and batteries. Citizens are encouraged to contact individual auto-related businesses for more information. There are no known antifreeze recyclers in the area.

Recycling Program

In addition to solid waste disposal, the county-operated sites also provide for the collection of several recyclable materials. All sites accept plastic, glass bottles, aluminum and tin food and beverage containers, old newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard and scrap metal.

An estimated 55% of all material collected at the refuse sites is recycled. Overall, Lancaster County's recycling rate exceeds the 25% recycling rate mandated by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Recycling Guidelines

Co-mingled Recyclables - Source separation is not required - all materials may be deposited into the same container. Primarily intended for plastic, glass, aluminum, and tin food and beverage containers. Items should be rinsed to remove food residue. Recyclable grades of plastic can be identified by the triangular symbol on the bottom of the container - all recyclable grades are accepted. Windows, mirrors and auto glass are not accepted.

Mixed Paper - All grades of paper are accepted. Old newspapers should be bundled with string or packed tightly inside paper grocery bags. Office, computer and other grades of paper should be packed inside plastic trash bags (since all grades of paper are to be placed in the same container, the plastic trash bags help us keep the mixed grades separated from the newspaper).

Cardboard - All grades of corrugated cardboard accepted except boxing containing wax lining. It is requested that larger boxes be folded or broken down. Paperboard boxes and brown paper grocery bags can be mixed with cardboard.

Scrap Metal - Includes appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters, air conditioners and ovens. Appliance dealers are required to remove refrigerants from freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners prior to disposal.
