Clerk of the Circuit Court
The Clerk of the Circuit Court is a state constitutional officer who is elected to serve an eight year term. The Clerk is responsible for the proper management, as custodian, of records and documents recorded and filed, and serves as the administrative officer for the Circuit Court. The 2009 edition of The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, hereafter known as the "VUSBC", went into effect March 1, 2011. Planning & Land Use Office
The Planning and Land Use Office is responsible for enforcement and administration of the Lancaster County zoning ordinance, erosion and sediment control ordinance, subdivision ordinance, Chesapeake Bay preservation ordinance and wetlands ordinance, and also handles enforcement of the solid waste disposal ordinance and inoperable vehicle ordinance.

Sheriff's Office
The sheriff's office is located at 8293 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster, Virginia, behind the county courthouse. Built in 1978, the main building houses the sheriff's administrative offices, county communications center, and local correctional facility. The Benson-Brent Annex, dedicated in 1999, houses the uniform patrol and investigative staff.

Waste Management & Public Works
Lancaster County operates three refuse collection and recycling sites. Kilmarnock - Located on White Pine Road (VSH 788) one mile SW of Kilmarnock. Lancaster - One mile east of Lancaster Courthouse on Regina Road (VSH 604). Nuttsville - Located on Gaines Road (VSH 723) one-quater mile from the intersection of Nuttsville Road and River Road.

Building Permit Database Search
The building permit database includes all permits issued by the Building and Planning and Land Use offices from July 2000 to present. The database is updated once per month.

Concealed Handgun Permit Information
Lancaster County residents may make application for a concealed handgun permit at the Circuit Court Clerk's Office, Lancaster Courthouse in Lancaster. E-911 Map Search
Lancaster County E-911 map books are the detailed maps used by law enforcement and emergency service personnel which show building addresses and locations and other information not shown on other county maps. Individual map pages can now be viewed and downloaded by using the search engine below. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view these files.

Local Tax Information
Lancaster County taxes are due on December 5th. After December 5th a 10% penalty is added. On February 1st of the following year, a $30.00 Delinquent Account Fee is added to each ticket. DMV stops are placed on personal property beginning June 1st of the following year and interest in the amount of 10% will begin to accrue on July 1st.

Vehicle & Dog Tag Information
Lancaster County no longer sells vehicle decals. Instead, a vehicle registration fee is added to the personal property bill. The fee is $20 for each car and truck and $12 for each motorcycle.

About Lancaster County
Settled in the mid-1600's, Lancaster County is located at the southeastern tip of Virginia's Northern Neck peninsula approximately 75 miles east of Richmond, 120 miles southeast of Washington, DC. The present Courthouse dates from 1860 and houses county records maintained virtually intact since 1652.

Special Wastes Guidelines
As of January 1, 2011, the Lively Woodyard no longer accepts construction waste. Residents may take construction waste to County collection points instead. Commercial firms/Contractors are required to make their own disposal arrangements. Stumps, wood, brush, leaves and other yard waste will continue to be accepted at Lively Woodyard.

Recycling Program
In addition to solid waste disposal, the county-operated sites also provide for the collection of several recyclable materials. All sites accept PET and HDPE plastic, glass bottles, aluminum and tin food and beverage containers, old newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard and scrap metal.
